Lives at Risk on Busia–Majanji Road: The Untold Danger Behind Cassava Trade...
A Growing Safety Concern Along the Border
Along the Busia–Majanji Road, a silent danger has been unfolding one that many see daily but few talk about.
At Busia Stories and Art, we’ve observed a concerning practice among some of the motorcycle (boda boda) transporters who ferry fresh cassava from Namyingo and various parts of Samia Bugwe Constituency, including Masaba, Buhehe, and Lunyo. These hardworking riders are transporting cassava to Kenya, helping sustain vital cross-border trade.
However, there is a serious safety issue that cannot be ignored:
Overloading of motorcycles with sacks of cassava, and even worse, people sitting on top of these sacks during the ride.
This practice is not just risky it is life-threatening.
One sharp turn, a pothole, or a sudden stop could result in a tragic accident, leading to severe injuries or even death. Sadly, in a place where access to emergency services is limited, such risks become even more critical.
Why This Matters
We understand the hustle. The need to earn a living. The demands of trade.
But life must come before profit. No amount of cassava is worth a life.
We call on:
Motorcyclists to prioritize safe transport practices and refuse to carry passengers on top of cargo.
Passengers and traders to avoid boarding overloaded motorcycles.
Traffic enforcement authorities to increase checks and raise awareness along the Busia–Majanji corridor.
Local leaders and community voices to help sensitize the public on road safety.
Together, We Can Save Lives
Let us raise awareness, start conversations, and hold each other accountable. We can’t afford to lose lives over something so preventable.
If you’ve witnessed or experienced similar incidents, feel free to share your story with us. Let’s speak up for safety.
