Yungnane’s nightly TikTok Lives have become a staple for late-night engagement in Busia. On this particular night, the session took a political twist when Hon. Kennedy, a parliamentary aspirant for Busia Municipality under the National Unity Platform (NUP), joined the live stream to speak directly with the people. I had the opportunity to participate in the discussion on behalf of BSA – Busia Stories and Art, and the conversation was powerful, revealing, and respectful.

1. On NUP Primaries:

When I asked about the upcoming NUP primaries and the race between him and his opponent (whom he respectfully did not mention), Hon. Kennedy explained how NUP selects its flag bearers:

“NUP sends a team to the ground to assess which candidate has stronger engagement and influence with the people,” he noted.

Unlike NRM, where members cast votes, NUP relies on ground assessments, visibility, and candidate influence.

Confidently, Hon. Kennedy added:

“I’ve done enough on the ground. I believe NUP needs a candidate who is financially stable—and I am financially OK.”

He went a step further, stressing that financial independence protects candidates from political compromise:

“A financially stable candidate is hard to be bribed by NRM or any other political force.”

2. On the Hon. Kamba vs. Hon. Sowedi Allegations:

Hon. Kennedy addressed the viral claims by Hon. Kamba, who accused Hon. Sowedi of lacking valid academic qualifications after losing the NRM primaries.

“The NRM Electoral Commission vets all their candidates. If Hon. Sowedi wasn’t qualified, he wouldn’t have been given the go-ahead,” he explained.

With a touch of personal experience, he reminded viewers:

“How did he vie last time? We were in the same race.”

3. On Busia’s Hidden Wealth and Visible Poverty:

One of his strongest remarks came when addressing the paradox of Busia’s status:

“Busia is one of the poorest districts in the region, yet it's the third in revenue collection after Kampala and Malaba. We have customs. We have gold mines. Why aren’t we benefiting?”

He emphasized the need for a voice in Parliament that will table real bills to transform Busia and break the cycle of poverty.

4. On Language and Unity:

When local artist Caspian Marvin asked why Luganda was used during the session, Hon. Kennedy responded with inclusiveness:

“Busia has over 10 tribes. The only language we can use for broader understanding and communication is Luganda.”

5. A Pledge for the People of Busia:

Hon. Kennedy ended the session with a clear commitment:

“I promise to change the face of Busia Municipality if elected.”

He also promised to grant BSA – Busia Stories and Art an exclusive one-on-one interview, where he’ll share more details about his plans, policies, and personal journey.
